The days of shopping online, tax-free may be coming to a finish.
A latest bill on Beacon Hill could force e-commerce sites like Amazon, Overstock and Zappos to charge Massachusetts shoppers sales tax. Local retailers say the Web sites have an unfair benefit.
By Commonwealth, the sales tax loss in 2012 is projected to be $335 million.
Similar bills passed in New York, Rhode Island, and Illinois.
The online shopping companies are resisting. Overstock.com President Jonathan Johnson said The Boston Globe laws forcing his company to gather sales tax are "unconstitutional and short-sighted."
