The Eden Project has reserved from sale bracelets
which are bedecked with a potentially lethal tropical seed. The jewels were on
sale in its shops in Cornwall for about a year. The poisonous seeds were
spotted by chance by one of its own horticulturists at the St Austell
attraction. Eden, which does not produce the bracelet, has issued a full
product recall and has reserved all remaining stocks from its shelf.
The bracelets hold a seed called abrus precatorius. The
attraction's orator, David Rowe, said: "We are talking about a strung seed
bracelet which comes from Peru. The seeds are laced in to cord. We've recognized
the seeds as potentially dangerous so we have inhibited the Leather bracelets from sale
right away. We have been advised in a great case, if these seeds are chewed or
ingested, it is very unsafe and potentially lethal.
Eden is asking anyone who bought such a bracelet
from the Eden Shop in the past year to return it for a repayment. The item has
not been sold during the Eden online store. Mr Rowe said he whispered a number
of other outlets in the UK were also selling the bracelet, from corporation Rain
stick trading, which was based in Suffolk. There is no proposal at this stage
that Rain stick was aware that the bracelet was made from any potentially unsafe
materials. The company has not been available for remark.
