Do’s and Don’ts of Online shopping

When we decide to buy something, online shopping has become the first preference for us rather than going to local mall, wandering in the midst of crowd, waiting in a long queue to pay bill and concluding with trouble at the end of the day. But when it comes to online shopping, it is fun, fast and easy to browse, compare prices and buy the products. The only part you need to pay attention is the security measures while making the transactions. Following are the “Do’s” and “Don’ts” that will help you to make a safer shopping in online.

Do’s:

  • Keep an updated anti-virus and install updates for browser and operating system software.
  • Shop at trusted and legitimate websites. Look for “https” in the address bar or a closed padlock anywhere on the screen to confirm that the site has a genuine certificate as an online business. Also avoid sites that don’t include their address and contact number.
  • Do your homework before buying a product. Check the privacy policies of website before you place an order.
  • Make sure that the website has seals of approval from the Better Business Bureau http://www.bbb.org/ and Truste http://www.truste.com/
  • Choose strong passwords. Protect them by changing it often and varying from site to site.
  • Keep checking your credit card statements frequently and make sure that no extra amount was charged in your bill.
  • Instead of taking a print out of your order, take it as a screenshot or save the page as html file.

Don’ts:

  • Don’t shop on public computers. There is always a risk of your information being stolen when entering personal information on a public computer.
  • Don’t pay online with a debit card for more protection against fraud.
  • Don’t buy products from spammers which are mostly offers that are too good to be true. . They might steal your financial information and use it fraudulently.
  • Don’t reload confirmation pages that fail to load which may charge you multiple times accidently.
  • Don’t respond to mails that requests your personal and financial information.
